Service Projects and Food Collection Schedule

Jesus identified himself as one who had come to serve, not to be served. The gospels are filled with stories of how Jesus helped people. We are to follow his example in serving people in need. One fouth of The Catechism of the Catholic Church is concerned with morality, justice and charity. About a fourth of class time should be devoted to service since it incorporates elements of morality, justice and charity. We will have a service project each month and four special service projects each year to encourage children to share with others. We will provide notes to be sent home with the children at the time of service projects.

Thanksgiving Baskets: PreSchool and elementary participants will collect items for Thanksgiving dinner baskets for parish families. Confirmation candidates collect donations at all Masses (Turkey Feathers) to provide social ministries with funds to buy turkeys.

Stocking Project: Preschool and elementary participants collect items for Christmas stockings for social ministries families. Middle School and High School shop for a list of items provided by social ministries for Christmas gifts for social ministries families.

Souper Bowl: Super Bowl weekend Confirmation Candidates collect money for social ministries.

Lent Rice Bowls: For our Spring project we will collect contributions for Operation Rice Bowl to benefit those who are hungry in our world. The Catholic Relief Servieces helps fund self-help projects in many countries. During Lent we fast so that others have what they need.

Easter Eggs: We will collect plastic eggs filled with jelly beans for the children whose parents request food assistance from our parish social ministry program. This will be an at-home project.

Food Collection and Outreach Collaboration:

An ongoing service project throughout the year is collecting canned food items for people in need in our community. The food is distributed through our parish social ministry program. Food is brought to the cafeteria. There will be a box in the cafeteria for the food. An item suggested for each month is in the family handbook given to parents.

We also collaborate with one of the outreach ministries in out parish each month:
