Saint Andrew Religious Education

2006-2007 Sacramental Preparation

The Process of Preparation for the Sacrament of Penance

  1. The family participates in a sacramental preparation workshop. At least one parent and the sacramental candidate must participate in the workshop.
  2. The family spends six weeks preparing the child at home with materials provided at the orientation workshop. Parent/s may contact the Director of Religious Education to provide pastoral support in preparing the child.
  3. When the parent and child feel ready to celebrate the sacrament, the parent and child make an appointment with the Director of Religious Education. At the appointment the child reviews the material with the Director of Religious Education and parent and rehearses the celebration of the sacrament.
  4. Families celebrate the Rite of Reconciliation together. If a parent is non-Catholic, they can pray with the priest for the family. If a parent no longer fully participates in the Catholic faith due to circumstances surrounding the marriage or family life, this is an appropriate time to discuss the issues with a priest. Often, families can resolve the issues in time for a family celebration of the child's First Holy Communion.
