The Process of Preparation

 

Evangelization

Meets twice a week from September to the end of October

  • The children must attend Religious Education on Wednesday Nights from 6:30PM to 8PM.
  • The Family (child and at least one parent or God parent) must attend Sunday sessions from 10:00 to 11:30AM followed by fellowship in the Youth Center from 11:30AM to 12:30PM and attend 12:30PM Mass together.

The purposes of this period are:

  • Share what brought your family to seek a deeper relationship with God.
  • Hear the Good News of the Gospel. Ask question about the Catholic faith.
  • Learn some Catholic teachings. Begin prayer and reflection in preparation and thanksgiving for a deeper relationship with God.

At the end of this period, you will choose a Catholic sponsor that will complete the remainder of the RCIA journey with you. If needed, a sponsor will be chosen for you. The period reaches it's end with the Rite of Welcome on the Feast of Christ the King; a time when the inquirer publicly requests membership in the Catholic Church and proclaims a desire to enter into the next phases of the RCIA program.

 

Catechuminate

Meets twice a week from November to Ash Wednesday in February or March.

  • The children must attend Religious Education on Wednesday Nights from 6:30PM to 8:00PM.
  • The family (the child and at least one parent of God parent) must attend Sunday sessions from 10:00 to 11:30AM followed by fellowship in the Youth Center from 11:30AM to 12:30PM and attend 12:30PM Mass together.

The purposes of this period are:

  • Study the weekly Scripture Readings during Mass at Wednesday Religious Education Sessions.
  • Examine Catholic Teaching more deeply at Sunday Sessions. Continue to ask questions about the Catholic Faith.
  • Share questions and faith experiences with Sponsor or Godparent.
  • Pray and reflect.
  • Experience parish life and opportunities for service.

At the end of the period is the Call to Easter Sacraments. AT this call the child is publicly recognized by the parish and diocese for their progress in preparing for full initiation.

 

Purification and Enlightenment

Meets twice a week from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday.

  • The children must attend Religious Education on Wednesday Nights from 6:30PM to 8:00PM.
  • The family (the child and at least one parent or God parent) must attend Sunday sessions from 10:00 to 11:30AM followed by fellowship in the Youth Center from 11:30AM to 12:30PM and attend 12:30PM Mass together.

The purposes of this period are:

  • Continued reflection on the Sunday Scripture readings and the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Pray and reflect about what to let go of and what to keep from life before becoming a Catholic Christian especially in celebrating the rites called Scrutinies during Lent.
  • Uncathechized Catholic children and baptized children of other Christian denominations prepare for the sacrament of Reconcilialtion.
  • Experience parish life and opportunities for service.

At the end of this period the child ecperience full initiation at the Easter Vigil. Baptism, Confirmation and First Holy Communion are celebrated together for the unbaptized. FOr the baptized, they receive the sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion.

 

Mystagogia

Following Mystagogia the children continue participation in Religious Education, but on Sunday they attend only fellowship from 11:30AM to 12:30PM and 12:30PM Mass together for six weeks following Easter.

  • Continue emphasis on sacred scripture, prayer and Christian service.
  • Reflect on the journey they have just completed
  • Experience opportunities "to go out and proclaim the Good News".
  • Tour of Saint Patrick Cathedral.
  • The RCIA program concludes on Pentecost Sunday as we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit.
  • Neophytes are invited to prepare for and celebrate the Sacrament of Penance and Rite of Reconciliation at the parish Advent and Lenten communal Sacrament of Penance and Rite of Reconciliation services.
