What is a Podcast?
Podcasts are audio/video files that one can play and listen to either on a computer or an MP3 player such as an Apple iPod (but not limited to just the iPod). Podcasting began recently within the Apple community (hence the name) but has quickly spread outside of it. With the advent of iTunes 5.0 from Apple a central point for people to list podcasts became available and the number of podcasts has increased. Apple’s iTunes site now has in excess of 1000 podcasts. And podcasts are not necessarily just a single file so one can subscribe to a podcast and therefore get new files from that serial podcast as they are published. There are a growing number (more than 100) of podcasts that are Catholic in nature including the daily english broadcast from the Vatican Radio. Below are listed categorized links to various podcast pages which you can download and/or subscribe to.
There are a number of programs that work on either PCs or Macs which allow you to manage the podcasts you listen to. They provide a way to search for podcasts as well as subscribe, automatically update if new episodes become available for a subscribed podcast moving the MP3 files to your computer. For PCs the most popular seems to be iPodder which is free. iTunes is now available in version 7 for the Mac & PC for free but will only sync to a supported iPod player.
